Arkansas Sphinx
Fort Douglas, AR - 0.5 Miles - Moderate Out & Back
Our hike to the Arkansas Sphinx will always be special. This was part of our very first day hike together. Thomas and I doubled up on hiking locations this day and made our way to the Sphinx after hiking a portion of the Ozark Highlands Trail.
Do not let the short distance fool you. The hike to this popular landmark is STEEP.
Parking for the trail is located along the edge of Pilot Rock Mountain Road. There were a few ATVs and Jeeps already parked, so we parked further down the road and walked a little ways to the trailhead.
I highly recommend trekking poles or a walking stick to assist your climb. I learned quickly that the few trees and bushes that line the path are swamped with thorns and briars.
At the top, the views of the valley are beautiful and you can see for miles. This location is a must see if you live near or are visiting the Fort Douglas area.
